BIG STORY: CITY’S SECRET CLOSED-DOOR DEAL UNCOVERED TO DEVELOP THOUSANDS OF APARTMENTS TO URBANIZE OUR CITY, DEVASTATING THE CHARACTER OF ENGLEWOOD WE ALL LOVE, FOREVER.

In October 2022, Englewood’s City Council and Mayor secretly offered a massive development deal to Fair Share Housing Center that could put more than 1,000 units in our city’s 4th Ward residential neighborhoods, move 2,000 units to the 1st Ward, hundreds in the 3rd Ward and nearly none in the 2nd Ward. This closed-door deal was finalized despite concerns from the Bergen County NAACP not to build more apartment buildings in the 4th Ward.

The City failed to provide any public disclosure to residents about this real estate deal. It was signed, sealed, and delivered in 2 weeks. Not until nearly a year later, did the City tell homeowners what they have done to them—"a deal that was set in stone” per the testimony of the City’s expert.

This development is the single largest apartment construction deal within residential neighborhoods ever created in Englewood or in the State. Just imagine, the sheer size of its acreage is more than 100 NFL footballs fields.

Our elected officials let us down! The City ignored the public outcry from our residents against the new law which threatens our neighborhoods and our suburban way of life.

That’s why Englewood One Community and residents joined together and filed a lawsuit to STOP the developers from their unfettered legal right to build high-density apartment buildings in the backyards of our homes and our public schools. Only this lawsuit is standing in the way preventing developers from immediately starting to build. The very character of the City we love is at stake.

How did our elected officials change our zoning laws and support overdevelopment in our residential neighborhoods to urbanize our City? The answer is clear: BEHIND CLOSED DOORS.

The public record shows that the City has not kept up with its long-standing support of affordable housing projects that are meant to help our communities, such as King Gardens and other affordable housing neighborhoods. Instead the City is exploiting affordable housing zoning resulting in the potential of $1.5 BILLION in development of thousands of high-end market rate apartments to line the pockets of real estate developers, when only a fraction of those units will be designated as affordable units.
