URGENT APPEAL: DAVID AND GOLIATH BATTLE TO SAVE OUR RESIDENTIAL NEIGHBORHOODS FROM UNCHECKED URBANIZATION!
This is the BIG STORY unfolding in Englewood, and we need your immediate support to turn the tide against the urbanization threat looming over our community.
At the recent City Council meeting, shockingly, there was an attempt to hire a third law firm funded by the taxpayers to defend against a lawsuit filed by an independent tax-exempt nonprofit charity organization and residents. This lawsuit seeks to overturn a law that would irreversibly urbanize Englewood.
Months of denial by four out of five council members have given way to a shocking revelation. In recent court filings, the Mayor and the Council Members in 2022 admitted to secretly obligating the City to overdevelop thousands of units in residential neighborhoods, even in flood zones. This was all done behind closed doors over a year ago, that could not be changed, not even with the public outcry of hundreds of residents.
Affordable housing communities like King Garden, Mary Street and Pindle Ave are under threat. The new law promoting redevelopment of apartment buildings in existing affordable housing could displace residents in these communities, with potential reductions of up to 50% in affordable housing units at King Gardens alone.
The damage is widespread, potentially increasing the population by 10,000 people with 94% of the apartment units in the 1st ward and 4th alone and more in the Third Ward. Oddly, we must ask why the 2th Ward is protected from the massive development of apartment buildings to replace residential homes.
Englewood One Community and its residents are rallying to fight for the right cause – protecting our city's residential neighborhoods and the quality of life we cherish.
WE NEED YOUR HELP to overturn this disastrous new law, passed by a split 4-1 council vote, allowing developers to build thousands of apartments units, as a matter of legal right in our backyards jeopardizing every facet of the quality of life of each residents.
The damage is done, but together, we can correct it.
Please DONATE NOW and join us in safeguarding the heart of our diverse community.
